In Memoriam
October 1952 – May 2025
Marlene Butler
Marlene was a dedicated lifetime member of the Ralph Bunche Alumni Association who was always ready to help with a smile on her face. Her grandparents, Melvin and Eva Maiden, were two of the founders of Ralph Bunche High School. Marlene understood and carried the legacy of RBHS and her grandparents through perilous times.

Marlene learned early on about the unprecedented legal battle “Civil Action 631” in the Federal District Court, which concerned the equalization of white and Negro school facilities and that led to the construction of Ralph Bunche High School. She celebrated this history and legacy of Ralph Bunche High School as it entered into the U.S. Congressional Record on June 22, 2020.

Along with the Association, Marlene endeavored to refurbish the school, establish a museum-gallery, and partner with other entities to preserve, honor, and celebrate the legacy of Ralph Bunche High School. Marlene knew how the building and the history that it embodies shaped the hearts and lives of citizens in King George County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and our Nation.

Marlene passed away on May 4, 2025. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, her family has asked for donations to be made to advance an important cause that Marlene believed in—one that will benefit the lives of members of our community for generations to come. RBAA has made tremendous advances in the last three years toward restoring the historic Ralph Bunche High School and creating a community center. With your support, we can do even more to preserve the important legacy for generations to come.
